Selling your beats for profit

Every person who makes beats has one of two motivations. Create a work of art or make money. There is no right or wrong motivation here and lets be honest, the most common motivation is to make money making beats. Even those that start out with artistic intentions may be swayed to sell a beat or two.

There are several ways you can make money by selling beats that you have made. Realize that selling beats can happen a number of ways, online sites exist to help you upload and display your beats for people to hear and purchase. You can also connect with people directly and sell them what you have.  In this article we will focus on your potential customer base.

Rappers

First, you need to realize that for every budding beat maker out there, there are probably 10 times more budding rappers. All needing original, dope beats to spit over. If you can find rappers in your town, try to connect with them from time to time. Face to face contact builds trust and relationships that are way better than online ones

TV and/or Movies

There are many people looking for a sound track for their videos. Many times when you’re watching a show like MTV Cribs, you will hear a constant track of rap beats playing in the back ground. All of these beats are ones made by up and comers like you. See it’s much cheaper for the show to buy a bunch of unknown beat maker beats than it is to license just one established one. Also don’t sleep on the fact that all local colleges probably have a lot of film students making their little independent movies who might need some soundtrack material for their scenes and credit rolls. Keep this in mind when you make beats.

Video Games

Similar to the TV and Movies, video games are another area where often times it is much cheaper for the game maker to license beats from unknowns. I know of many people who make beats with a video game action sequence in mind. But just like for movies, a nice mellow beat you make could be used in an ending credits roll.

Summing it all up

No matter how your beat is used, a sold beat means dollars in your pocket. Dollars that can go towards new sounds and equipment for your beat making business. Or just blow it all on a fresh pair of Nikes! The point is, to make beats for money is not a bad thing and if you keep everything above board, it’s a legal way to earn a living and make a career.
